  • Hi everyone,

I recently joined this forum and started using DMXControl, and I’m still trying to get the hang of everything. It looks like a really powerful software, but honestly, the setup part feels a bit confusing at the beginning.

I’m currently trying to understand things like fixture setup, patching, and how everything connects in a proper workflow. I’ve gone through a bit of documentation, but I thought it would be better to ask people here who already have hands-on experience.

If you’ve been using DMXControl for a while, I’d really appreciate your advice:

What should a complete beginner focus on first?
Any common mistakes I should avoid early on?
Are there any tutorials or guides that actually helped you when you started?

Also, if you have any personal tips or small tricks that made things easier for you, feel free to share. I’m here to learn and improve step by step.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

  • So for me the workflow is always something like this:

    1. Setup devices
      1. Add all my devices into the project (might require creating DDF files)
      2. Add my devices to device groups (although groups can also be created automatically)
      3. Create stage views, sometimes with all devices in one, sometimes per device type its own
      4. test all devices only stageview a device properties
    2. Create Cuelists
      1. Create cuelists e.g. for color, dimmer, movements
      2. add these cuelists to cuelist groups (if needed)
    3. Create UI
      1. Create a Softdesk
      2. an Connect all inputs/outputs of that softdesk using the Input Assignment

Of course this is greatly simplified and there will be other approaches out there, but thats mine and I believe it covers the most important things in order to start using this software and get something to light up in a controlled manner.

With regards to your specific questions.
What should a complete beginner focus on first?
I think at the very first you might do a small learning project. Like 4 RGB generic RGB lights, a couple of cuelists controlling them, and a small softdesk to start/stop your cuelists. I believe if you are able to do that, you will have done most of the very basic things.
Any common mistakes I should avoid early on?
I wouldn't really call it mistakes. There are just many ways to reach a goal. And some require more work, some less. The only real mistake I would say is not trying. I for example needed a while to understand the InputAssignment and how much it could really do. Turns out almost anything.
Are there any tutorials or guides that actually helped you when you started?
There are many video tutorial on youtube. I think most of them are german, but you could use english subtitles.

These tutorials for sure will cover more than enough to start with. There is also an english tutorial page https://wiki-en.dmxcontrol-projects.org/index.php?titl…ls_DMXControl_3
Some things will be outdated, but most of the basic stuff is still valid today I think.

  • Probably the most important advice, once you start creating Cuelists with Fanning or Effects, DO NOT select multiple fixtures with your mouse and apply the effect to them. Create a group instead, and apply the effect to that. Otherwise it will be annoying to edit the effect later.

DMXControl has quite a few very good tutorials on their youtube channel, however you will need to watch those with subtitles, as they are german. Everything else is learning by doing. Start with a few simple fixtures and play arround.
