We proudly present: The release of DMXControl 3.3.3!

On September 29, 2026, we held our release show for DMXControl 3.3.3. During our usual “hour-long” session, we showed you all the new features in this version and what it now has to offer.

  • Is there a way to set the number format in the channel overview to % permanently rather than Dec? The kids I'm working with find the Dec value to be confusing so every session I have to go in and change it to %. I can't find a way to change it as a default to % in the global system settings although I'm just being a bit blind. It would be helpful to be able to permanently change the "View" to channel only rather than universe and channel. I get asked repeatedly about both of those things, the kids are quite young, only around 10-12 yrs old.

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

unfortunately, there is no way to set the representation to % permanently in this window, because we did not put that much effort in the window :saint: The reason for that is that the channel view does not realy fit into the control concept of DMXControl 3. Maybe you already know but just to be shure we have the same understanding: One of the key features of DMXControl 3 is the hardware abstraction layer (or HAL for short). It provides an uniform user interface so that you can control all devices with their device properties (color, intensity, position,...) rather than the corresponding DMX values. You can even select different device types like LED fixtures and moving heads at once. Despite the fact that the most moving heads have color wheels and the LED fixtures have channels to control the individual base colors, you can still control both at the same time. The resulting DMX values will be generated automatically by the HAL with the HAL magic behind it. The user does not need to care about the resulting DMX values anymore and thus we mostly hide the DMX values from the user. However, this window shows exactly that, the resulting DMX values in different representations. Thats why the display setting in this window is set to the dec setting by default, because this shows the DMX values the best. We implemented this window to have a feedback while developing or debugging a DDF. It is not designed to be used during the show. This might be a tough fact for all users who came form a clasical DMX value based control getting used to the non DMX value based design of DMXControl 3 (it even was for me back then :saint:). But we think, with the HAL it is much easier to control the devices. However, if I understand you correct, the kids need a way to see the current intensity of the devices, am I right? If yes, then you can use the stage view for that as well. There is an option to show the brightness of the devices with a % value in the device icon (here, the % representation is default). Just enable it in the options of the stage view window and it stays on. If the position of the devices on the stage view represent the real world position of the devices, you can even better see, which devices have which brightness. I hope, this helps you and the kids :)

P.S.: I am a little bit curious what you are working on with the kids. I mentor a technical working group in my former school with kids in the same age to do the light and sound for different school events like theater plays :)

  • Hi JPK,

many thanks for the response. No worries, I understand that the concept behind DMX Control is to use the HAL and stage View combined with fixture groups to very quickly build scenes and presets. The question came up a few times and the kids enjoy watching the values change when they trigger cues and so on. It was more about garnering interest from the kids than actually needing the values to be represented in % rather than Dec, although I will admit that yes, I'm more used to the older style of control going all the way back to physical 2 preset lighting desks.

It's a youth theatre group in western Canada. My son was participating in the tech aspect and the volunteer who was running the course departed so the academy director who knew I was formerly a tech asked me to step in. We're doing a production of Alice in Wonderland in April. The kids are so young, and we have limited time each week to get practice in so I'll probably end up doing most of the programming but it's a thing to do.

    Thanks again for your time.
